CRKVA SV. LOVRE I ZGRADA BISKUPIJE
Trg Sv.
SPOMEN KRIPTA A. KANIŽLIĆA U CRKVI SV. LOVRE
ST. LAWRENCE CHURCH AND DIOCESE OF POZEGA
Holy Trinity Square 18II, 34000 Požega, Croatia
Next to the headquarter of the Požega diocese is the church of St. Lawrence, one of the oldest monuments of Gothic heritage and a monument of world value.
The church, which is connected to the bishop's residence by a corridor, was built in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, and stands out with its Gothic sanctuary and Baroque tower.
The interior of the Church of St. Lawrence is enriched by Gothic frescoes from the 14th century, which, despite numerous destructions, have been preserved through the centuries, and which today boasts the epithet of world artistic value.
MEMORIAL CRYPT OF A. KANIŽLIĆ IN THE CHURCH OF ST. LAWRENCE
In 1998, Pope John Paul II. proclaimed St. Lawrence the patron saint of the Požega diocese, so this medieval church became, after the cathedral of St. Theresa of Avila, the second most important in the diocese.
In the same year, during the consecration of the church, the relic of the Blessed Alojzije Stepinac was built into the main altar, and four new bells were erected in the bell tower. It is interesting to note that in the crypt of the church of St. Lawrence lie the remains of the famous Jesuit Antun Kanižlić.
DIOCESE OF POŽEGA
The magnificent building of the Bishop's House, the building of the former Jesuit residence, is located next to the church of St. Lawrence. It was built by the Jesuits from 1709 to 1711. The bull of Pope Clement XVI from 1773 abolished the Jesuit order, and they were forced to leave the College of Požega.
In 1832, the building was bought by the Bishop of Zagreb A. Alagović, who upgraded another floor and turned it into an orphanage. Today's appearance the building took over in 1904, losing its Baroque features.
With the founding of the Požega diocese in 1997, the building of the Požega College became its center, and shortly afterwards it was thoroughly renovated.
